How to create a Google Discovery (Demand Gen) campaign in 2023

  1. The first step in creating a Google Discovery (Demand Gen) campaign is to log in to the front end of Google Ads.
  2. Following this, you need to click ‘create campaign’ on the campaign’s menu.
  3. The next step is to choose the relevant objective. This will more often than not be leads or sales.
  4. When it comes to choosing your campaign type, you will need to choose ‘discovery campaign’ (Demand Gen).
  5. When prompted, you will need to enter the landing page into the website link box and name the campaign.
  6. Following this, you will need to select the most relevant conversion goal.
  7. Select the relevant location and languages.
  8. Next, you will need to set your bidding strategy and daily budget.
  9. You can then set a start and end date for your campaign, however, most of the time this will not be necessary. We also recommend adding content exclusions to exclude sensitive content and irrelevant topics.
  10. The next step is to create an audience using segments such as keywords, competitors’ websites, re-marketing audiences and interests. We would recommend using keyword lists of keywords from your Search campaigns as the most effective audience segment.
  11. Turn off optimised targeting as in our experience, leaving it turned on leads to a lot of waste and poor-quality traffic. Following this, press next to create the ads.

  13. Following this, review the settings of the campaign and you can then publish it.
